Born in London, 29 June 1936. Educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham, 1947-55; St. Catherine's College, Oxford, 1957-61, M.A. 1961. Served in the Royal Corps of Signals, 1955-57. Married Alexandra Margaret Thompson in 1967; two sons and two daughters. Assistant master of Latin, Greek and music, County High School, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, 1961-64. Recipient: Evening Standard award, 1962; John Whiting award, 1974; Obie award, 1977; New York Film Festival gold medal, 1987; Society of Authors scholarship, 1988; European Film Festival Special jury award, 1990.
